Imperial Oil, Ltd. (1920-1951) |
BackgroundImperial Oil was founded on September 8, 1880 when 16 businessmen contributed $25,000 each. In 1898, majority interest was acquired by John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Co. The Royalite Oil Company can be traced to Calgary Petroleum Products, founded by Archibald Wayne Dingham in Calgary circa 1914, which was reorganized as the Royalite Oil Co. upon acquisition by Imperial Oil in 1921. Imperial Oil, Ltd. listings date to 4/1920 under IOX reporting marks (earlier listings have not yet been digested), Transit Co., Ltd. listings date to 1/1920 under TCLX reporting marks. BMMX (meaning?) and CSGX (Cities Service Gas?) reporting marks added to Imperial Oil, Ltd. listings by 4/1927. PRPX (Perfection Petroleum Co.) and SUPX (Supertest Petroleum Co.) reporting marks added to Imperial Oil, Ltd. listings in 7/1928. COBX (meaning?) reporting marks added to Imperial Oil, Ltd. listings by 4/1938. By 10/1951 the Imperial Oil, Ltd. and Transit Co., Ltd. fleets had been amalgamated (although numerous transfers from Imperial Oil to the Transit Co. had taken place as early as the 1920s, suggesting a strong relationship between the two companies), and it is likely that just about any reporting mark could be found on any series by this date. In 10/1953 nearly all cars were transferred to Products Tank Line of Canada and were renumbered to UTLX reporting marks during the next seven years, but the BMMX mark was retained by Transit Co., Ltd. for a small fleet of narrow gauge tank cars and not eliminated until 4/1973. In 10/1957 the IOX reporting mark was returned to Transit Co., Ltd., and would remain in use until its elimination in 10/1975. The remaining reporting marks were phased out by Products Tank Line of Canada as cars were renumbered: COBX in 4/1959; CSGX in 1/1958; PRPX in 7/1958; SUPX in 1/1960; and TCLX in 4/1960. Note: Determining the series limits of these cars has proven very difficult because of the varying nature of these fleet's listings in the ORER, complicated by the spartan listings of any tank car in the ORER. Later series (numbered 3000 and up) are probably quite accurate, lower numbered cars are not nearly as certain.
