CILX 1-65 series |
CILX's 1-65 series cars were built in about eight groups from late 1922 through early 1928 for predecessor Canadian Salt Co., likely all by American Car & Foundry. These cars were classified as ARA-V cars (pressure) for use in Chlorine service, with the last cars (61-65) arriving after the change in classification to ICC-105. Originally classified as AAR type TMI, at the time of their 1929 transfer to CILX, the AAR type was changed to TPI. Available photos show that these cars changed little over the years, aside from the mandated change to cast sideframe trucks and AB brakes. 58 of these cars remained on the roster at the time of the CILX transfer to UTLX circa 7/1956, and it would appear that the cars were quickly renumbered to UTLX 81000-81065 (CILX ORER listings show that cars 8, 10-11, 33, 53 & 55-56 were retired prior to the merger). By 8/1960, 30 cars remained in service, with none remaining in 11/1970. At this time it is not possible to definitely determine which ACF lots correspond to which group of cars (with the exception of 1-15 which has been confirmed by a builders photograph), but lots assigned to CSXX include: lot 9533 (9 cars ordered 12Jan1923); lot 9596 (10 cars ordered 27Mar1923); lot 9978 (5 cars ordered 14Feb1925); lot 5086 (5 cars ordered 7Oct1925); lot 295 (5 cars ordered 7Aug1926); lot 373 (5 cars ordered 23Nov1926); lot 436 (5 cars ordered 11Feb1927); lot 637 (5 cars ordered 8May1928) & lot 742 (5 cars ordered 1Oct1928). In addition at least one lot (lot 567 (5 cars ordered 5Nov1927)) was for cars in the 101-105 series, and cars 106-110 likely account for one of the other later lots as well (likely lot 637).
