BackgroundThe CASO was an early railway in Southern Ontario, being formed in 1869. It was leased to the Michigan Central for 999 years, commencing Jan. 1, 1904, and in turn was leased to the New York Central in 1929. The CASO passed to Penn Central control following its formation in 1968, and to successor Conrail in 1976. During the mid-1980s, CN and CP jointly purchased the CASO from Conrail in order to acquire the Windsor-Detroit tunnel. The CASO has only occasionally had a visible rolling stock presence during the last century, mostly hand-me-downs from the railway's owners.
